Hold on to Your Job and Have Compassion for Those Who Cannot

Times are tough and people are taking radical measures. The unemployment rate is increasing rapidly and people who have been unemployed for months or longer are becoming more frustrated. One toy industry executive has taken to walking the streets of New York wearing a sandwich board that advertises his need for a job. CNN reported Paul Nawrocki’s plight today. He has been out of work since February and has had no success finding a new position. His wife is partially disabled and depends on medication; his daughter relies on student loans. And he is about out of money. Unfortunately, Nawrocki’s situation is not uncommon. The U.S. government reports that 533,000 people lost jobs in November and 1.9 million jobs have been lost in 2008. There’s not a lot to be cheerful about when you hear a story like this. It makes you want to hold on tight to any job you have. But have sympathy for those out of work. It can happen to all of us. And it wouldn’t hurt to be ready in case it does happen.
